The health ministry said 300,000 vaccines for teachers would arrive today.

Teacher unions have called for teachers to be vaccinated as schools experience a spike in Covid-19 infections.

The executive director of the National Organization of Professional Teachers (Naptsa), Basil Manuel, told Arabile Gumede that 300,000 doses would not cover the entire cohort of teachers and education.

With the 300,000 that we have to start somewhere, we have to have a plan and hopefully within the next couple of weeks we will be covered.

It is about people’s mental health and their sense of security.

Manuel says each district will have one to three vaccination sites and that schools have been given dates to be vaccinated.

We are still talking to some of our skeptics. 75% of our members said they would take the vaccine, the remaining 15% were on the fence.
