CENTRAL DEVON MP Mel Stride praised Lloyds Bank’s commitment to continue providing mobile banking services in his Central Devon constituency despite a drop in footfall.
Mobile service to Chagford, Hatherleigh, North Tawton, Moretonhampstead, Ashburton and Bovey Tracey was interrupted in March 2020 due to the pandemic but reopened in late 2020 with bi-monthly service for the majority of stops.
Mr Stride said: “We have unfortunately seen many bank branches in our constituency close in recent years due to the rapid increase in online banking. But not everyone has access to the Internet and some of them, especially those who find it difficult to use a computer, do not feel comfortable banking online. Mobile banking services may not be used by many people, but they are a real lifeline for those who do. ‘
Nicky Heyworth, West Devon Borough Councilor for Chagford Ward, said: “The Lloyds mobile banking service that comes to the Chagford Health Center is a very popular local service and I am very happy that it continues. I expect at least part of the reduction in usage to be due to the pandemic and hopefully ridership will increase again when we get to spring and summer.
Barry Ratcliffe, West Devon Borough Councilor for the Borough of Exbourne, which includes North Tawton, said: “The mobile banking service provided by Lloyds here in North Tawton is particularly valuable to some of our older residents in and around town who find online banking difficult. The service also saves car trips to Okehampton, which is good for the environment. ‘
