Roanoke County Schools Add Early Layoffs and Alternative Wage Hikes

ROANOKE COUNTY, Virginia. – Members of the Roanoke County Public School Board had teachers in mind during a working session on Tuesday. Several changes have been made to alleviate the stress they are under in these unprecedented times.

Beginning in the week of October 15, teachers will have a day off or two hours early leave each week until the winter break.

Here are the dates affected by this change:

  • Oct. 15: School closing (home teacher’s working day)

  • October 20: Dismissal early by two hours

  • October 27: Dismissal early by two hours

  • November 2: schools closed for election day

  • November 10: Dismissal early by two hours

  • November 17: Dismissal early for two hours

  • November 24-26: Schools are closed for Thanksgiving

  • December 1: Dismissal early by two hours

  • December 8: Dismissal early by two hours

Some days schools are closed for other reasons, such as teacher working days or election days.

The board also changed an early termination on November 24, the day before Thanksgiving, to an additional holiday for everyone.

The goal is to give staff time to do things like catch up with work, meet with students and parents, or get vaccinated against COVID-19.

The school board has also increased the salary of substitute teachers in an attempt to encourage substitutes to work more days and hopefully get new ones applied.

Substitute teachers, graduates and non-graduates, will see an increase of $ 40, or $ 140 and $ 125 respectively.

The salary of teacher assistants (graduate or not, elementary or secondary) increases to $ 110.

“It should put us well above our surrounding communities. I’m glad we were able to do it, even if only for this year and it’s something we can talk about next year as well, ”a board member said on Tuesday.

Salary changes are possible due to the extra money left in the budget this year due to difficulties in finding replacements.

All these changes concern the 2021-2022 school and will be evaluated before the 2022-2023 school year.
